6 Ways to Take Your Nails to the Next Level

Posted on Aug 12 2008 8:24 AM by adnana

Sometimes, the easiest, least expensive way to switch up my look is with a polish change. One of my weekend mental health rituals has long been to set aside a few *me* minutes to paint my nails in front of the TV. A new nail color and a mani/pedi at home recharges my batteries and helps me start the coming week with a positive attitude.

Essie Fall 2008 Nail Polish Collection Keeps in Character for Fall

Good morning, friends. I hope you’re having a good weekend so far. I’m sitting here at my desk, playing with nail polish and surfing the Net for beauty news.
Check out Essie’s fall polish line ($8 each). Keeping in character for fall, the collection features deep plum, berry and cherry shades that look good enough to eat (I’m always hungry, LOL!).
Sometimes I shy away from uber-dark shades because of how obvious it can be when they chip, so I’m glad Essie decided not to go too vampire dark with these colors.

Manicure/Pedicure by OPI

If we can find time on the weekend, we like to give ourself a mani/pedi.

Over the years, we’ve realized that we prefer our home mani/pedis to any we’ve had at a salon—it’s just so much better to decompress on the couch with our favorite polish while catching up on episodes of The Girls Next Door .

Autumn in the City: Sally Hansen Fall Nail Lacquer Colors by Tracy Reese

Fall is my favorite time of year in San Francisco. It rarely gets either cold or hot in the city, with the Bay keeping the climate pretty much the same year ’round, but the brief summer we do get usually occurs in what would normally be the fall, which means t-shirts in October and sometimes even November.

Trend Alert! - Neon Nail Polish from Nubar

Well I have been coveting Rihana’s colorful nails for quite some time now but I wasn’t sure if I could pull off the look. The way I see it “life is short” why waste time wondering, I decided to give it a shot!

The color that caught my eye was orange, purple and maybe blue. Those were the colors I was willing to experiment with initially. Well due in large part to the marketing genius who created the following tag line: states that it looks lovely on “dark or olive skin”. Well I fall into the latter category.

Extreme nail art: Laser-etched nail portraits

Got your own laser-etching thingy? Didn't think so, But if you do happen to have one handy, this Instructable will teach you how to laser etch detailed portraits into your nail polish. I do think he's rather insane for subjecting his own fingers to this terrifying process though. Cringe-worthy video after the jump of what happens if you use your own finger, AND miscalculate...

Joining our two favorite Estee Lauder serums (Advanced Night Repair and Idealist) this summer is Lauder’s most comprehensive wrinkle lifting treatement to date.

This potent serum helps skin boost natural collagen production, smells delish and feels ultra smooth when applied. With a NEW exclusive Peptide Fragment that is so small (six times smaller than most common peptides) it penetrates to the deepest layers of the surface of the skin and begins to stimulate new collagen production.

Treatments And Cure For Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is a persistent and troublesome problem. The fungi responsible hide between the dead layers of keratin, where they are inaccessible to the immune system and where drugs have difficulty penetrating. There is a pill for nail fungus, but you have to take it for 3 months and it may cause liver problems. Fungi love warm and moist environments to grow in. Tight footwear especially when used for exercising, provides an ideal breeding ground for fungi. Communal showers are another place that fungi are commonly growing and being passed between various people’s feet and toenails.

Watching old black and white movies on TV the other night, I felt compelled to add some color to my life. I applied three coats of Lippmann Collection’s Lady Marmalade nail polish ($15), a shimmery coral pink.

Play to Win with Lippmann Collection Fall Nail Colors

Seeing these Lippmann Collection fall nail polish colors ($15 each) for the first time, I thought one thing: VEGAS, BABY! The red, black, white and black-purple colors remind me of playing cards.

Beyond the occasional slot machine (free drinks!), I’m not much of a gambler, but when it comes to nail colors, I will take chances. I’ll wear yellows, blues and even purples.

Splurge or Steal: Essie Neon Delivers Chanel Nail Colors for Less

I know I can’t be the only one out there drooling over the upcoming Chanel Robertson Boulevard limited edition nail polishes; the neon-bright shades in pink, purple, orange and yellow remind me of 1960’s pop art. I think they’ll look groovy on fingers and toes, but at $25 apiece, they sure aren’t budget friendly.

Bourjois's Tropical Art nail range lets you paint your fingers with one stroke

I love it when my nails are painted and groomed, but let's face it, how much time do we really have for grooming everyday? Add to that being out of action for half an hour whilst we flail our digits around, and bitten and chipped ain't looking so bad. Well now you have Bourjois's Tropical Art nail range (out in July) which supplies you with a one second coat of colour.

It does this by having an innovative brush that angles itself to your nail, and fans out covering it all, The panoramic brush design is truly impressive, and I didn't have any nasty unpainted bits left after one swipe. It's also super quick drying, at under a minute, but you do need around two coats to build a bright colour.

Bright Ideas for Summer Nails

Summertime means being able to wear brighter nail colors like corals, hot pinks and even sparkly blues or purples without looking like crazy nail lady. Here are a few ideas to brighten up your fingers and toes.

* Essie Summer 2008 Nail Polish Collection: Help!
“After washing off my neon-orange fingers and chewing three Tums (note to file: do not eat half a bag of cheese crunchies in one sitting), I pulled out my Essie Summer 2008 nail polish stash and painted each of the nails on my left hand (and the pointer finger on my right) different colors. This is what too many cheese crunchies can make a woman do.”
