A new study reported in the BBC explains how researchers from Osaka University in Japan believe that they have found another link in the obesity problem: wolfing down food.
Scientists studied the eating habits of 3,000 persons and found that eating fast may interfere with the signaling system of the body that tells you to stop eating when you’re full. This can lead to over filling of the stomach. Grabbing food in a hurry worked for humans in the past as a mechanism of evolution. Allowing us to eat more when food was scarce, but now for most of us, food is plentiful and we continue to overfill our stomachs on a daily basis, with no lean times to compensate. Mom’s advice about chewing food twenty times before eating may well of been right. By slowing down the rate at which we eat, we allow the body time to tell the brain to stop eating, without overfilling the stomach. Since eating patterns can be formed at an early age, children should be encouraged to take their time eating, and parents should set an example. Compared to slow eating men, fast eating males were 84 % more likely to be overweight and just over half of the women showed that tendency. Half of the 3,000 persons in the study admitted that they were fast eaters. Please note: The information in this article is not to be followed as medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
